Mahinda Thar: Overview

The second-generation Mahindra Thar has gained significant traction in the automotive market since its 2020 release. Initially celebrated by the off-roading community for its robust capabilities, the Thar also attracted a broader customer base due to its enhanced versatility. The upgraded Thar now features a more modern interior, improved driving dynamics, and the option for automatic transmission, making it viable as a daily driver.

However, Mahindra has introduced new Thar variants with rear-wheel drive (RWD) only, excluding the traditional 4×4 system. These variants are equipped with a smaller diesel engine, benefiting from tax incentives that make the Thar more affordable. Despite the lower price, questions arise about how the Thar performs without the 4WD capability that it’s known for.

In addition to these changes, Mahindra has rolled out a new powertrain option for the 2023 Mahindra Thar. The lineup now includes a 1.5L diesel engine, which qualifies for GST benefits on vehicles under 4 meters in length. This engine, also used in the Marazzo MPV, produces 117 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Notably, the 2023 Thar offers RWD with both the new 1.5L diesel engine and the 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol unit.

Exterior:

The exterior of the updated Mahindra Thar remains largely unchanged, retaining its distinctive boxy design, slatted grille, round headlamps, and exposed bonnet clips. The only notable difference is the removal of the “4×4” badge, signalling the shift to RWD in certain variants.

Interior:

The most significant change in the interior is the removal of the 4WD lever, replaced by a storage cubby hole suitable for holding a smartphone. Apart from this, the dashboard, seats, and overall feature set remain consistent with previous models. However, considering that these RWD variants are targeted at urban users, Mahindra missed an opportunity to add more convenience features such as a dead pedal for automatic variants, a driver armrest, automatic climate control, wireless charging, and Type-C charging ports.

The Mahindra Thar’s features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mahindra’s BlueSense connectivity. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-launch assist, hill-descent control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a roll cage. The Thar has earned a 4-star rating for adult occupant protection from GNCAP, based on the older testing methodology.
